Black Heritage > Black Liverpool Today
The diversity of Liverpool's black community can be quite clearly seen today if one walks down the majestic Princes Avenue, one of the main streets in the Toxteth L8 area of the city. Somalis, Yemenis, Africans, Caribbean and probably the most unique of all, Liverpool born black people, can be seen living, working and being educated side by side. Today, the terms Toxteth and L8 are both commonly used to refer to the location of Liverpool's black community, the latter term being the most popular with black residents themselves. The non-white population of Liverpool is now estimated to be around 8.2 per cent.
