Slavery Trail Walking Tours

rumfordThere are many ways in which you can learn about Liverpool's varied history and involvement in the slave trade and its abolition.

On this website we offer you the opportunity to choose the tour most suited to your needs.

Guided Tours

Black heritage walking tours and lecture presentations by qualified guides are available for individuals or groups in the Liverpool City Region. These tours, lasting about 1 1/2 hours, are suitable for anyone interested in more extensive information about Liverpool's role in the transatlantic slave trade, its abolition and its black heritage. Some tour guides are able to visit schools, organisations and institutions to deliver a virtual walking tour that highlights aspects of Liverpool which are relevant to these themes.

Downloadable mp3 tour
Laurence Westgaph, a Liverpool historian and writer on the city's role in the slave trade, has compiled an audio trail which you can download and transfer to a portable mp3 player to enjoy on your visit to the city. On his tour, he takes you on a tour of buildings and places of interest related to this subject. A downloadable map accompanies the tour.

The tour takes around an hour to complete, passing points of interest and places where you can stop for refreshments so feel free to break your tour to find out more about the buildings that are open to the public or to enjoy Liverpool cafe culture. Listen for the directions when it's time to move to a new location on your tour and remember also to press pause on your MP3 player so that you can easily pick up the tour again.

Transcriptions of the tours are available on request from tourism@liverpool08.com.

The tour was produced in partnership between Liverpool Culture Company, National Museums Liverpool and The Mersey Partnership to commemorate the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the British Slave Trade in 2007.
