Liverpool has one of the most impressive collections of museums outside of London.
Most exciting of all for 2011 is the opening of the new Museum of Liverpool. The largest newly built national museum in Britain for more than a century is housed in a landmark new building at the Pier Head. Themed galleries will document the history of the city and focus on different aspects such as its role as a cradle for creativity, from nurturing writers to producing comedians and musicians, and what it means to be Liverpudlian.
Many other museums are located around the Albert Dock, such as the Merseyside Maritime Museum, where you can find out all about the companies, people and ships connected to this great port. Visit the International Slavery Museum there too, which tells numerous poignant tales of bravery and rebellion among the enslaved people.
World Museum Liverpool is another fascinating spot, bulging with historic treasures from around the world, with an aquarium, bug house and planetarium. The World of Glass in St.Helens, where you can learn all about glass blowing and the history of glass making in the region, is also a popular option.
