Performance
Liverpool theatre has a fantastically strong reputation, and Liverpool City Region has plenty of top theatre performance spaces. The legendary Everyman and Playhouse theatres stage world premieres by local and international writers, and the two famous Liverpool theatres are responsible for launching the career of several celebrated actors (Bill Nighy, Julie Walters and Pete Postlethwaite all started out at one of them).
An alternative Liverpool media arts centre is FACT (the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) which specialises in multimedia exhibitions, film and digital art. FACT Liverpool stages ground-breaking new media shows and pioneers new forms of artistic and social interaction with audiences. Previous FACT Liverpool shows have included the extraordinary work of leading digital artists Bill Viola and Pipilotti Rist.
But if you visit Liverpool you should not miss out on The Philharmonic Hall, home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra led by the celebrated Vasily Petrenko. As well as fully orchestrated classical concerts, The Philharmonic Hall also stages all kinds of musical events, from jazz to contemporary music, Elvis Costello live to choral renditions of the full Beatles’ repertoire.
Liverpool City Region also has strong theatre offerings in Southport and the Wirral Peninsula, which enrich the Liverpool theatre scene. Both have their own vibrant theatres and put on everything from pantos to classical concerts.
