Mersey Coast & Country > Coast > The Mersey Estuary Activities
The Mersey and Dee estuaries offer unrivalled opportunities for all to get onto the waterfront and enjoy the open spaces, sea breezes and wonderful views.
They are not only excellent locations to view a myriad of rare and beautiful species of wildlife including grey seals and over wintering/wading birds but also offer opportunities to walk or cycle the coastal paths or 'have a go' at an extensive range of water and wind related sports.
Along with sailing, windsurfing, canoeing etc. on Mersey estuary
and four marine lakes there are also beaches where sand yachting (Wirral) and kite surfing (Sefton) are permitted. There are sailing clubs dotted along the banks and slipways where boats can launch onto the estuary (permits are required) and where sea angling is becoming an increasingly popular pastime.
Angling has always been a very popular pastime along the banks of the Mersey. If you're a keen angler you will have no trouble finding the right locations along the river and coast. At high tide fishermen can be found on the beaches and along the miles
of promenade that make the Mersey Estuary so accessible.
Around all this activity marine and coastal life continues to thrive with the grey seal and porpoise regularly sited swimming in the estuaries and basking on sand banks.
