Tourism Development

This section discusses and directs you to information regarding the development of Merseyside as a destination.

The city of Liverpool as an international port has had a long history of attracting tourists for a great variety of reasons, in more recent years, its heritage, culture and arts has been a focus for visitors. This focus is discussed further in the section Tourism, Heritage and Culture. The section discusses the use of culture through strategies adopted by Merseyside since the 1980s to the present day.

Since the 1980s a Merseyside approach has been taken to developing the destination collectively. The Mersey Partnership has taken a leading role in this broader prospective and has a strategy for tourism development (available to download on this page).

The Agents of Tourism

The Mersey Partnership has aided the development of the Merseyside 'product'; TMP's promotion and development of the Merseyside image is considered in the section of this web site Introducing Tourism on Merseyside .

For information on The Mersey Partnership's activities, see TMP's annual report.

The Mersey Partnership has tourism members representing all sectors of the Merseyside industry, including accommodation providers, attractions, transport operators, tour operators, guides, and other services. TMP business networks have been set up to identify issues and opportunities affecting tourism businesses on Merseyside.

Working alongside The Mersey Partnership are many other organisations. A major partner in tourism development is the Liverpool Culture Company.

The England's North West Tourism Skills Network aims to support the tourism industry in the North West, and it has an influence on skills and training within tourism organisations on Merseyside.

The objectives for tourism development for Merseyside can be found in various documents published by the above organisations. A fuller discussion can be found in the Higher Education section of this web site.
