Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra
Liverpool may be synonymous with The Beatles and pop music, but it also has a fine world-class tradition of classical music via the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, housed at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
The RLPO is led by the youthful, charismatic Russian chief conductor Vasily Petrenko, who was awarded the Classical BRIT Awards Male Artist of the Year in 2010 and whom Liverpool has adopted as one of their own.
Concerts at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall include full-blown orchestral pieces and an incredible range of symphonic concerts, played by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vasily Petrenko. But the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall also has visiting performances by leading world music and contemporary artists, performances by the RLPO choir and evenings with the award-winning contemporary ensemble 10/10.
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s upcoming season for 2010/2011 includes work by a wide range of composers, from Tchaikovsky to Mahler. Vasily Petrenko highlights one particular week in January 2011 when works by Elgar, Brahms, Sibelius and Rachmananinov will all be played. The RLPO season also includes more unusual events such as the live musical accompaniment to a charming cartoon of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf.
