Halton sits astride the River Mersey to the east of Liverpool. Runcorn and Widnes are the major towns, and many more picturesque parishes and villages make up the borough.
The village of Daresbury, where Lewis Carroll, the famous children's author, was born, is a pretty countryside village featuring a church with stained glass windows depicting Carroll's life.
Halton's 'landmark' is the Silver Jubilee Bridge, one of the largest of its kind worldwide. Designed by Mott, Hay & Anderson, it spans 330 metres (1082 feet) and was opened in 1961 by Princess Alexandra of Kent. It is Grade II listed.
Walking part of the Trans-Pennine Trail, weaving down a canal, or enjoying one of Halton’s many special events such as Creamfields, there’s many ways to spend your spare time here. The Widnes Vikings Rugby League team are based in the borough, there’s the Brindley arts centre and Norton Priory Museum and Gardens for culture lovers, the Catalyst science and discovery centre for science fans, and plenty of nature reserves and countryside walks for outdoorsy types.
