Getting Started

coupleThe best way to start one's family history is to collect any oral memory from any elderly relative and to collect any family memorabilia which still exists. From this material names and rough dates of births, marriages and deaths can be obtained which can be verified later from official records.

Planning a family reunion to obtain more information could be of great help to your research. Ask relatives to dig out their family albums and try to get copies of photos but be sure to record who the individuals are with as many dates, locations, any additional information which will build a more vivid picture of your family history.

www.familyrecords.gov.uk

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

www.findmypast.com

Or local sites such as:

Liverpool Record Office - a site providing an excellent introduction to researching Liverpool roots.

www.mersey-gateway.org - site with a succinct overview of Liverpool's history.

What else can I do?

Start making a family tree. A fantastic website which can help you trace your roots as well as build your family tree is www.ancestry.co.uk. The site offers an extensive collection of family history information free of charge and holds over four billion names in its database.

You may need to dig deeper if your family are from outside the UK. www.movinghere.org.uk can help determine when individuals arrived in the country and where they settled.

It has to be remembered that the growth of Liverpool took place through immigration as much as natural growth which means that a lot of people migrated to and left from this major port and were not necessarily born here.
