Birkenhead has recently been picked by tourism experts as one of the Northwest's most important historic towns - see for yourself on the Birkenhead Heritage Trail.

For spectacular views, visit Birkenhead Priory and St Mary's Tower. This Benedictine monastery was founded in 1150 and its monks supervised the first regulated 'Ferry Across the Mersey'.

Don't miss Shore Road Pumping Station - it's the home of the Giant Grasshopper, a working model of one of the huge steam pumps from the 1800s. For opening times call 0151 647 6780. Make sure you also get along to Port Sunlight where the new visitor attraction, Sunlight Vision, has just
opened. This eye-opening attraction gives you a fascinating glimpse into the history of this unique model village.
