The ‘Liverpool Phil’ is the oldest surviving professional symphony orchestra and the second oldest concert-giving organisation in the UK. It was founded by a group of Liverpool music lovers in 1840 and has been at the heart of the Liverpool’s cultural life ever since.
The superb art deco style, Grade ll listed Philharmonic Hall, is one of the UK’s top arts and entertainment venues and home of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, whose chief conductor is the charismatic young Russian,Vasily Petrenko. The orchestra gives over 60 concerts each year with internationally renowned guest artists in its home venue, as well performances in concert halls across the UK and abroad.
Philharmonic Hall's year-round programme features top names from classical, contemporary and chamber music, folk, roots, jazz, blues, rock, pop, comedy, spoken word and partnerships with the City’s festivals including Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival, Liverpool Irish Festival, Liverpool Comedy Festival and Brouhaha.
Classic films are screened on the Hall's unique Walturdaw cinema screen, which rises from under the stage, accompanied by Merseyside's only resident organist, the inimitable Dave Nicholas. 'After 8' is a popular series of roots, jazz and unplugged gigs in the intimate, cabaret setting of the Rodewald Suite at the Phil.
