Princes Road Synagogue

The Old Hebrew Congregation's Grade I* listed building (1874) with spectacular interior. Probably Europe's finest example of the Moorish Revival or Saracenic style of synagogue architecture. Guided talks (1 hour) outline the architecture, the history of the building and of the local Jewish community and include a demonstration of the artefacts and their place in Religious traditions. The Synagogue was designed by W and G Audsley of Liverpool. Built in 1874 of red sandstone and unpressed brick, the building impressively combines Gothic and Moorish architecture. The stepped gable surmounts a rose window flanked by octagonal turrets. The interior is rich in marble and gold and has a tunnel vaulted nave, a magnificent Byzantine style Ark of the Convenant and a columnated almemar.

Road Directions

End of M62, sharp left onto Queens Drive, follow dual carriageway. At end of dual carriageway (double roundabout) turn right onto Allerton Rd. Continue on this main shopping road for approximately 3 miles. Road name changes from Allerton Rd, to Smithdown Rd to Upper Parliament St. Turn left onto Princes Rd (next traffic lights after Grove St) Synagogue is about 100 yards on left.
