Black Heritage

The Beatles, The Chants and Little RichardLiverpool's greatest period of economic wealth from the mid-eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century came at a price: the ruthless exploitation of African resources, which not only included raw materials but also humans.

However, when one begins to unravel Liverpool's black past there emerges a fascinating story of one of the most vibrant minority ethnic communities in Britain. One that although heavily influenced by the transatlantic slave trade is far more wide-ranging in depth.

Liverpool has a great spirit, depth and vibrancy about it, best reflected through its culture and diversity. This website not only gives you the story of Liverpool's black heritage in bygone years but it reveals the many facets of contemporary black Liverpool life. We hope that it is a catalyst that enables us to increase the diversity of the visitors to our city whilst at the same time celebrating Liverpool's black heritage.
