Home > Welcome to Liverpool > Liverpool Year of the Environment
There can be few more pressing issues than the environment, both local and global, but it's millions of people doing things more sustainably that will make the difference. So even before the Capital of Culture applause has faded, Liverpool has embarked on its next grand project -2009 is Year of the Environment.
The City Council's latest initiative aims to promote green issues to businesses, households, schools and other public organisations through education, incentives and, above all, action. Throughout the year there will be events both to promote green living and also to celebrate what we have, such as fantastic green spaces, commercial organic growers, miles of pristine coastline and some unique wildlife habitats.
Leading by example, the Council is planning to replace all its vehicles with low emission models, and will be encouraging the population to get involved with conservation projects. 2009 will also see a major environmental conference in the city, where heated debates will aim to prevent a heated planet.
The organisers hope to attract businesses with clear and sustainable policies to get involved, further spreading the message that going green can have benefits from the river bank to the bank balance.
