Halton Castle stands on a prominent rocky hill overlooking the River Mersey. A location which must have been chosen for its "elevated position and excellent potential as an observation post". It was also an easily defensible site, a military stronghold capable of repelling attack.
The Castle Hotel public house is set within the historic wall of the castle in what was originally the 18th century courthouse. The Castle Hotel public house is open normal licencing hours.
You can walk around the outside of the castle walls at any time. Parking outside the public house is limited.

Less than 30 minutes by car from Chester, Liverpool and Manchester.
From M56, Junction 11 or 12 Join the circular expressway system. Take the signs for "Northwich, Chester M56" and then the take the signs for "Halton Village and The Brow". Then follow Halton Castle brown signs. Exit at the Halton Brow junction and head up the hill to Halton
Village. Along the Main Street and into Castle Road (opposite Trinity Methodist Church).
