Gathering light - Glass by 20 International Artists

The Women’s International Glass Workshop will premiere 20 specially made pieces in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King from 7 June to 27 August 2008.

Forty years after the completion of the Metropolitan Cathedral, with its famous glass and concrete lantern by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens, new glass of the 21st century will be shown in this outstanding building.

Twenty years ago a group of female artists from around the world working with glass met for the first time at an exhibition in Germany. Following this they proposed a plan to exhibit and meet biennially in each other’s countries experiencing the place, different cultural backgrounds and the professional glass art scene. They met in Iceland and Wales, Austria, Ireland, Japan, USA, New Zealand, Canada and Australia.

The show then travels from ‘modern’ Liverpool, Cultural Capital of Europe during 2008, to the cradle of European church architecture in France, to the international renowned Centre International du Vitrail in Chartres next to the world’s most famous gothic cathedral. There the show will be on display until September 2009.

All artists work and exhibit internationally - they come from England and Wales, Ireland and Iceland, Germany, France, Austria and Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and the USA.
