Richard Strauss Till Eulenspiegel
Mozart Piano Concerto No.27, K595
Shostakovich Festival Overture
Shostakovich Symphony No.6
Vasily Petrenko conductor
Steven Osborne piano
No composer captured the spirit of his times quite like Dmitri Shostakovich – but even by his standards, his Sixth Symphony is almost too honest for comfort. Written in 1939, as Europe teetered uneasily on the brink of war, it's an intense and unforgettable masterpiece, in which heartfelt sorrow jostles with desperate laughter. It's a very powerful contrast to the razorsharp hilarity of Richard Strauss' tone-poem– and the joyous grace of Mozart's sublime final piano concerto. The superb British pianist Steven Osborne is the soloist in a work as playful as it is profound.
* This is a one day only show. 2.30pm (doors 2pm).

If you are coming to Liverpool on the M62, finding the Philharmonic Hall is straightforward. Continue along the motorway until its end and then follow the signs for the city centre, cathedrals and universities (about 3 miles). Turn left at the Metropolitan Cathedral and head past the Everyman Theatre along Hope Street. If lost, use this maxim: find one cathedral, head for the other. The Phil is halfway between the two.
The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is a 10 minute walk from both Lime Street Station and Central Station.
