High-jinks and hidden passions: the hero of Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka may be a puppet, but his emotions are devastatingly real. Stravinsky’s tale of love and death in a Russian fairground is one of the 20th century’s great orchestral showpieces, a glittering, multi-coloured carnival of stamping folkdances, bustling crowds and sinister waltzes. Strauss’ loveable prankster Till Eulenspiegel is human – all too human – but for sheer irrepressible cheek, he gives Stravinsky a run for his money. And Mozart’s final piano concerto combines playfulness and profundity the way only Wolfgang Amadeus knew how. The British pianist Steven Osborne shows the poetic side of his breathtaking technique.
Classic Intro at 6.30pm

If you are coming to Liverpool on the M62, finding the Philharmonic Hall is straightforward. Continue along the motorway until its end and then follow the signs for the city centre, cathedrals and universities (about 3 miles). Turn left at the Metropolitan Cathedral and head past the Everyman Theatre along Hope Street. If lost, use this maxim: find one cathedral, head for the other. The Phil is halfway between the two.
The Liverpool Philharmonic Hall is a 10 minute walk from both Lime Street Station and Central Station.
