“Passionate” and “Compelling” are just two of the words frequently used to describe Sir Simon Rattle’s memorable orchestral concerts. The affectionately named Liverpool Phil is where he began his stellar music career so it’s a fitting setting for his return to Liverpool, with the Berlin Philharmoniker.

Musical aficionados will revel in the programme which includes a new work by Brett Dean, one of the most internationally performed composers of his generation. Philharmonic Hall has long been an acclaimed and integral part of the artistic life of Liverpool. Its art deco splendour was restored in 1995 following a £10.3 million refurbishment. Parts of the foyer are said to be based on decoration in the tomb of Tutankhamen.
