Football

Liverpool and Liverpudlians are passionate about many things, but football is right up there at the top. The city is, in short, footie mad.

Liverpool is home to two of the premiership’s biggest football teams, Liverpool Football Club and Everton Football Club, and the city’s inhabitants are cleanly divided between support for the Reds, or Liverpool FC, and the Blues, or Everton FC. The two football teams are the source of much heated debate in the city’s pubs.

Liverpool FC’s dramatic win at the Champion’s League Final 2005 in Istanbul has gone down in history as one of the most exciting and extraordinary matches of all time, whilst a few seasons ago Everton FC, known as the Toffees, turned Wembley almost all blue with fantastic support at the FA Cup Final.

Liverpool FC’s ground at Anfield and Everton FC’s Goodison Park are meccas for the club’s devout fans, filling to capacity for home games and attracting tourists and corporate events alike.

But the football passion spreads over the water too, to the Wirral Peninsula. The Wirral’s own Tranmere Rovers have just as active a following, including celebrity fans such as Elvis Costello and Half Man Half Biscuit. The Rovers’ loyal fans doggedly follow their League One football struggles at Prenton Park in Birkenhead.
