Besides football, golf, rugby and horse racing, there are a number of other sporting activities that are hugely popular in Liverpool, from running to yacht racing and tennis.

Running has a big following in Liverpool, and there is a jam-packed calendar of Liverpool running events throughout the city. These include the Liverpool Half Marathon, usually held late March, the Liverpool Triathlon in June, plus a Run The Bridge event across the Silver Jubilee Bridge spanning the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes that takes place around Easter. The Liverpool Triathlon is the UK’s newest triathlon and takes participants through the historic waterfront area, with the start and finish at the Echo Arena.

Water sports are popular in Liverpool too, not surprisingly because of the famous Liverpool waterfront and its maritime history and heritage. There is sailing, canoeing, water skiing, windsurfing, yacht racing and power boat racing, mostly at the dedicated watersports centre, Merseysport, located near to Queen’s Dock beside the River Mersey. But there are numerous individual clubs in the region which specialise in various water sports and maritime activities too.

In addition to these, Liverpool and Liverpudlians love their tennis, and the city annually plays host to the International Tennis Tournament, which attracts some of the world’s top international tennis talents. The International Tennis Tournament is staged in the heart of the scenic Calderstones Park in June and is rapidly becoming a top event in Liverpool’s sporting calendar. A particularly popular element is the Legends Day, which attracts such major international tennis stars as John McEnroe.
