Racing
Horse racing is as much a part of Liverpool’s beating heart as football and golf.
The Grand National consists of a gruelling four-and-a-half mile race with 30 jumps, including Aintree’s giant Becher’s Brook, the epitome of National Hunt racing. The fabled horse race is a highlight in the sporting calendar and is the world’s most watched sporting event, with an extraordinary annual audience of over 600 million. The Grand National has made superstars of jockeys, horses and trainers over the years. Red Rum took the title three times between 1973 and 1977 – the only horse ever to do so.
As well as Aintree Racecourse, which has six other race days besides the John Smith’s Grand National, there is horse racing too at Haydock Park in St.Helens. Haydock Park has events throughout the year including the Northwest Masters which takes place at Aintree as well. The Northwest Masters offers a thrilling weekend package of top-class horse racing in November each year, divided between the two race courses.
