This year, the Open Championship will return to the Royal Birkdale in Southport in July 2017. Once again, the worlds' greatest golfers will gather to do battle for the famous Claret Jug at one of the sport’s most renowned and challenging venues.
Since 1860, The Open has been played over some of the world’s most cherished links courses and has produced a remarkable legacy of great champions. From earlier greats such as Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones, Henry Cotton and Walter Hagen through modern legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros to exceptional talents of today Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy, the greatest players in the world have faced the unrelenting challenge of The Open for more than 150 years.
Map & Directions
Southport is accessed by the M6, which connects road users from the North and South. Road users coming from the North should exit at junction 31 and follow the A59 through Preston, following signs for Southport. From the South, take junction 26 and follow the M58 towards Liverpool, exiting at junction 3 onto the A570 to Southport.
All public parking will be located at Park & Ride facilities, which transport motorists to and from the course on dedicated buses. Spectators are urged to use these facilities to minimise disruption to local traffic and ensure the fastest possible transfer to and from The 146th Open. If you have purchased parking in advance please follow the information provided within your ticket pack. Please note you may also be provided with a reserved car park coloured label, in that case please follow signs to that coloured label car park.
Public Transport Directions
Hillside Railway Station is located just a five minute walk from the golf course. Merseyrail operate a service from Liverpool Lime Street to Hillside every 15 minutes. Liverpool Lime Street is connected to most major UK cities via the rail network.
