Liverpool is a city that moves to its own rhythm, a city that has music at its heart, famous for its Mersey Beat and for those four lads that changed the music world forever.
Liverpool is a UNESCO City of Music. It’s a coveted title that isn’t given out to just anyone. In fact, there’s only 2 cities in the UK that hold this accolade and that’s us and our Scottish mates Glasgow. But we didn’t get a UNESCO off the back of The Beatles alone, there’s so much more in this city’s musical roots and branches. Let's explore it all, shall we?
LIMF: Liverpool International Music Festival
How does a music festival sound in one of the most beautiful parks in the UK? How about a festival with incredible performers like Gorgon City, Corinne Bailey Rae, Becky Hill, Norman Jay MBE, Trevor Nelson and more? What about a festival that celebrates up and coming talent, as well as some of the biggest names in music? Sounds good, doesn’t it? Liverpool International Music Festival is held each year in the city’s Sefton Park. There are ticketed events at the park’s restored Palm House and a VIP experience but other than that it’s completely free. Stay tuned for next year's dose of LIMF, because trust us, you'll be seething if you end up missin out.
The Philharmonic
Did you know that Liverpool is home to the UK’s oldest continuing professional symphony orchestra? Now you do. There's nothing more mesmerising than seeing the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in action, first formed by a bunch of music lovers in 1840. Headed up by critically acclaimed Chief Conductor Vasily Petrenko, the Orchestra gives over sixty concerts each season in its home, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, as well as concerts in venues across the city. If classical isn't your thing, they've undergone collaborations with international artists from rock and pop include Liverpool’s own Sir Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, the Lightning Seeds and Echo and The Bunnymen; so give it a go. Even if the orchestra isn't playing, The Phil hosts plenty of other gigs, just have a look here.
Liverpool Psych Fest
Prefer your music a little bit more experimental and electronic? We've got that covered too. Look no further than the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia. Celebrating artists at the cutting edge of today's global psychedelic renaissance, you’ll enjoy visual art, film, performance and music. Fans do actually travel from around the world to this annual festival, and you'll soon find out exactly why. Headliners in 2017 include The Black Angels, Songhoy Blues, LOOP, Wolf People and plenty more.
Folk on the Dock 2017
UNESCO City of Music, on a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just a bit top notch, eh? Let's face it, you really can’t beat a music festival in the surroundings of a stunning waterfront like ours. The August Bank Holiday weekend is also time for Creamfields, but for those who like it a little more sedate then head to the Albert Dock for hundreds of folk acts, including sea shanties, acoustic performances and more. Though this year's has just been and gone (sob), you'll have to keep an eye on our social media so you can get 2018's dates in your diary well in advance.
Liverpool Sound City
Since it began in 2008, Liverpool’s Sound City has attracted names like The Flaming Lips. Ed Sheeran, Belle and Sebastian, Bastille and Royal Blood. Crowned ‘Best metropolitan festival’ at the UK Festival Awards, it’s an unrivalled festival of live music and arts. Run by people who live and breathe music, they scour playlists, stages and clubs for the best live acts and bring them to Liverpool every year. We’ve got a lot to thank them for. Well worth a visit before tickets start selling out as fast as they do at Glastonbury.

24 Kitchen Street
If you never find your favourite gigs on billboards and you much prefer it that way; head underground. This is a city that’s attracted musicians, whatever their genre, and there’s always been new venues springing up in places you wouldn’t expect. 24 Kitchen Street is one of Liverpool’s finest music venues, but it’s one for those in the know. Acid House, Grime, House, Tech House, you name it they host it. An independent venue in the heart of the Baltic Triangle, one of the coolest corners of Liverpool. They host the Baltic Weekender every summer which in 2017 features Goldie, Axel Boman, Hunee, Mele and more.

Invisible Wind Factory
Kazimier productions, the people behind Invisible Wind Factory, describe it as a “cultural theme park of the future”. Theatre, music and performance blend all rolled into one. This summer you can see Nicolas Jarr, a queer disco basement night and special one offs in this huge and mystical warehouse. It’s along the North Docks, not far from the Titanic Hotel and it’s well worth adding to your Liverpool itinerary.
Upstairs at LEAF
Head upstairs at our favourite Liverpool tea room and oh boy, music delights await. Underneath the fairy lights, you’ll see a range of exciting music acts. In the past, LEAF's stage has hosted Lanterns on the Lake, Ciaran Lavery and so much more. If you're after a laid-back haunt with a beautiful atmosphere, this is the ticket. They also have an exquisite tea range and do delicious food, nestled in their space on Bold Street; Liverpool’s independent hub.
Mellowtone
When you’re a music fan in a new city you often want to tap into the music taste of the locals and see what gigs they’re going to. Basically, if you’re coming to Liverpool, make sure you look up Mellowtone. Independent promoters and a record label, they host gigs across the city’s most intimate venues. DJs, acoustic, blues, folk and some of Liverpool’s finest singer songwriters. Come and see who we hang out with!
Liverpool Cathedral
A somewhat unlikely venue to hold huge music gigs like Cream, but that's our incredible Liverpool Cathedral for you. This is no ordinary place of worship - the Sunday service isn't the only time where this magnificent building comes alive. It's become the epicentre and the go-to venue for largescale gigs and musical happenings and we're super happy to have this beauty to show off.
