You’ve worked hard all year and now, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for a Christmas break to enjoy with the whole family.

It’s that time for fun, family and making fantastic memories, but also that time to kick-back, relax, and indulge in a winter break that’s jam-packed with magical experiences that you can share with each other for years to come. From Winter Wonderlands to storytime with Santa; this Christmas, Liverpool is about to take you on a family city break that you’ll never forget.

The great thing about this city is the sheer choice on offer.

If you want to have the full getaway Hotel treatment, we’d suggest the Pullman Hotel located on Liverpool’s world famous waterfront - ideal for trips to Albert Dock (looking all sparkly this time of year) and of course, panoramic views of the River Mersey. If you’re after a more ‘home-from-home’ stay, try BridgeStreet Serviced Apartments at the heart of our Liverpool ONE retail haven; where apartments are complete with fully functional kitchens, onsite parking and plenty of space for the whole family. Both Holiday Inn’s at the Albert Dock and across the road from Lime Street Train Station are also a great option for good rates, good rooms and perfect locations.

DAY 1

🎄🎄🎄 #christmas Today the Christmas Foundation Launch is taking place @christmasdecoratorsliverpool @thechristmasfoundation

A post shared by Liverpool Town Hall (@liverpooltownhall) on

Let’s start with the most magical activity of all - story time with the *real* Santa. For kids below the age of 12, it’s the most magical way to meet the guy himself, say hello to his elf helpers, give him their Christmas wishes and be taken on their own special Christmas journey - for adults, you get to see the beautiful Liverpool Town Hall that’s enjoyed visits from international Royalty and a famous homecoming for the Beatles on its front balcony. With a special Santa gift for the kids to take home and cherish, we think it’ll make the perfect start to your magical break.

You might start feeling a little peckish, so head up towards the beautiful St George’s Hall to indulge in some tasty treats at the Christmas Markets. From waffles, crepes and hot chocolate to hog roasts, homemade pies, pasties and pastries and the best Bavarian and even Mongolian cuisine; basically, there’s plenty of festive food to get your teeth sunk into. While you’re here for a refuel, it’s the perfect chance to pick up some unique gifts to take back home too - and don’t forget to take some family photos; the surrounding area is picture perfect, and you’ll want to savour the merry moment!

While you’re in the St George’s Quarter area, you must visit the World Museum with the kids. Not only will it keep them occupied as they discover the Aquarium, the Bug House and the Dinosaur displays - but they’ll even get the chance to see the Mummy Room which is INCREDIBLE! There’s so much to see and do, you’ll love it just as much as the little ones. Oh, and it’s all free!

Stop off at at the place that Christmas present wishes come true - Liverpool ONE. You’ll find stores Disney, Build-A-Bear and LEGO, as well as Debenhams and Primark to finish off your Christmas lists nicely. There’s plenty of coffee stops along the way like Costa, or opportunities to try Bubble Tea at Mooboo - that’s an experience in itself!

First trip to Liverpool, first priority is lunch #lunch #food #yum #albertdock #smugglerscove #weekend #tgif #friday

You must have walked up quite the appetite by now, so head to Smuggler’s Cove on one of the most visited free tourist attractions in the country - the Albert Dock - for some dinner. Choose from their fabulous deli-style menu rotisserie and home comforts like fish and chips, while the little ones can expect a surprise as their meals a treasure trove! With great views of the whole of the Albert Dock lit up in Christmas style, you’ll feel cosy and content as can be.

We’re pretty sure you wouldn’t want to miss this. As you walk through the Albert Dock you might see a crowd of people gazing in awe as the winter evening darkness becomes a canvas for the most magical and impressive light display Christmas has seen...sounds interesting doesn’t it? Following other famous landmarks like Big Ben in bringing festive projections to their facades, it’s the perfect addition to an already beautiful spot at Christmas time.

Christmas can’t be done without an all-star panto, right? Well you’re in luck this year, as you’ve got tonnes of picks to get you into the spirit. There’s Aladdin at the ECHO Arena - complete with genies, magicians and mesmerising battles, or Cinderella at the Empire Theatre with Princes, Princesses and glass slippers. For kids that are a little older, there’s also Harry Potter complete with a live orchestra and a Dreamworks Animation in concert too. Just make sure you check the dates and timings to avoid any sad faces!

There are over 600 artefacts on display at the BME. What's your favourite? #Livepool

A post shared by The BME (@britishmusicexperience) on

One things for certain, you can’t leave our wonderful city without feeling some rhythm. Two of our favourite attractions for music fans are along the waterfront, both offering fun and interactive experiences with interesting history woven into it all. At the Beatles Story, you’ll get to take your own underwater trip on a replica of the Yellow Submarine, go behind the scenes at the famous Abbey Road and kids can even create their own Beatles inspired artwork, newspaper or play a Beatles tune on a giant piano. If you fancy having a go on musical instruments, seeing outfits worn by artists such as the Spice Girls and so much memorabilia you’ll be amazed at the British Music Experience

We’ll leave the choosing of which one to visit is up to you!

Our incredible backdrop of our Three Graces will be transformed into the most gorgeously crisp white winter wonderland you’ll see, and that’s where you’re headed next. Grab some skates to embark on the ultimate festive ice skating or psych yourself up for the UK’s longest real Ice Slide or experience the traditional rides like the Victorian Helter Skelter, Santa’s Train and of course, the Tea Cups. If a winter warmer and a bite to eat is in order, you’ll love the Bavarian Food Court here too. You might have a hard time leaving it’s so magical!

🎅🏻 Santa Secret 🎅🏻

If you’ve got some time while on our waterfront, head to the Museum of Liverpool - from the 16th November you’ll find a giant Santa at over 5 metres tall with a boot size of 45. You’ll be be able to see (and take a selfie) with the Santa that brought joy to around 10,000 visitors a week when it stood at Liverpool Blackler’s department store’s Winter Wonderland Grotto 1957 - 1988. But shh, it’s a secret!

Now we know you’ve already been to Liverpool ONE for shopping (not that one shopping session is enough of course), but we wanted to show you our wondrous 30ft tree that we call our Liverpool ONE tree, as it starts to get dark. Emblazoned with 280 mesmerising heart lights, it’s the perfect backdrop for a shopping stroll and the perfect journey to take to get to the restaurant.

Just across the way from our tree, you’ll find Jamie’s Italian. Rustic, simple Italian dishes and freshly made pasta every day means that this is one of our favourite places to eat when we’re in the area with our family. With offers happening often - like Kids eat free! - and the kids menus being healthy but delicious, we say you’ve just found your new favourite restaurant.

Film Time

One last dose of Christmas can call for a few things - one of them being an exclusive screening of the Muppets Christmas Carol at the British Music Experience on Liverpool's waterfront. Festive at its finest! Don't worry about food either, their Star Cafe has cinema style snacks and drinks to see you through the evening.

Or if you're after a less festive evening and little legs are tired after walking, maybe the cinema is up next? Just check what’s on before you go online, or even just head in there to see for yourself (it's not far!), and once you’re done, head out onto Chevasse Park at the top of Liverpool ONE to see all of the Christmas goodies going on up there. We repeat - more rides and fun things!

🌟 Follow the Stars 🌟

Sooo @thekazimier have got Bold Street going all stranger things 😍

A post shared by VisitLiverpool Official (@visitliverpool_) on

Last but no means least should be a journey to see our Stars. Set along two of our most famous and beautiful streets, Castle Street and Bold Street, the whole family will see powerful lasers shine above glistening stars suspended in the skies. With an extraordinary display of sound happening too, its one of the parts of this Christmas that we can't wait to share with everyone. Just remember to make a wish to come back to Liverpool soon once you see it!
