The Everyman Company kicks off its second season with a revival of 1950s Broadway musical, Paint Your Wagon.

Set during the 1850s Gold Rush, this is a story of prospectors living nomadic lives and dreaming of making their fortune in California’s wild west.

While Ben Rumson (Patrick Brennan) finds gold and builds a prosperous town, his daughter Jennifer (Emily Hughes) finds love with a Mexican miner, living on the fringe of their wandering community.

Jubilant and folksy, it’s a show that rattles along with stomping singalongs, delicate ballads and charming, energetic choreography. The show glitters with a talented ensemble cast, swapping characters and costumes at lightning speed.

The story, set in 1850s and written in the 1950s, is dated and clearly of its time, with sexism and racism that’s an anathema to modern audiences. But this is a hugely enjoyable musical, mass chair-dancing and toe-tapping in the audience adds to an uplifting, joyful experience.

There’s something quite special happening at the Everyman right now. Be part of it.
