Vegetarians and vegans are familiar with the search for meat-free options when travelling. While it’s not always easy when visiting somewhere new, Liverpool has plenty of restaurants which offer vegetarian and vegan meals for any time of day, from a fuelling breakfast, midday snacks to a hearty evening meal. 

The Egg is a true institution in the city. The cosy café, which is based on the top floor of a building just off bohemian Bold Street, has been a home-from-home for vegetarians for decades. It’s open for breakfast every day, running through to the end of the night, and with a roster of meals that changes daily. It’s not licensed, but you’re welcome to bring a bottle for a small corkage fee.

The Meeting House Café is a joint venture between the Liverpool Quakers and Blackburne House, serving fresh vegetarian food in the Quakers’ base on School Lane in Liverpool ONE. It’s mainly for breakfast and lunch and everything is vegetarian, including the black pudding on their full breakfast. Money raised is invested back into good causes, giving their delicious fare an extra glow.

White Wolf Yoga & Kitchen is a combined a yoga studio and vegan and vegetarian health food café. Their plant-based menu is made from totally fresh and made from local ingredients. A perfect place for tranquility, White Wolf Kitchen serve delicious vegan treats from brownies, cakes to donughts! It's hard to choose a favourite dish but we definatley recommend the Big Boston Breakfast. 

Moving south of the city centre, Lark Lane is a popular stretch of independent bars, cafes and restaurants on the border of Sefton Park. It’s home to Green Days, a unique cafe bursting with character and art open Thursday – Monday. The handwritten menus offer all kinds of vegetarian options, although our personal favourite is the full breakfasts, which are ideal before or after a long walk in the park.

In leafy Woolton, The Old Hardware Shop is a new café that seems to specialise in making adventurous meat-substitute dishes – see their recent specials of BLTs, Salami sandwiches and ham and pineapple bagels. The vegan milkshakes are also an impressive achievement, alongside more ‘regular’ vegetarian choices.

Maray is a firm favourite in Liverpool, and their weekly Meat-Free Mondays is not to be missed. You must try their famous Disco Cauliflower dressed in flaked almonds, pomegranate, tahini, yoghurt & harissa, plus their Tenderstem Broccoli, Mushroom Boureka and Fattoush Salad are DIVINE!

Many restaurants in Liverpool cater well for vegetarians alongside their meat offerings. There are too many to name, although Pen Factory, Host and Delifonseca are good examples of places where vegetarian dishes don’t seem like an afterthought.
