Liverpool ONE Christmas Tree

It’s where there’s a 30ft Christmas tree and an Ice Festival that looks out onto the glistening River Mersey. Where you can drink five dollar shakes, lovingly distilled gin and tick off a Night Out off the Lonely Planet Bucket List.

Where museums and galleries are free and where the waterfront is so iconic, Shanghai decided to copy it. Where Christmas Markets glisten on neo-classical architecture and hundreds of secret, magical spots wait to be snapped up and posted on your Instagram. If you’ve heard the hype about Liverpool at Christmas, well, it’s all true.

This Christmas, you’ll be welcomed to Liverpool like an old friend that’s ready to show you the best festive time. If you like the sound of it, good - let’s get you started on your Christmas break.

STAY 🛌

DAY 1
Shopping 🛍️

Let’s start with the important stuff - shopping. You’ve got *a few* presents left to get, but Liverpool has got you covered. The vastness of Liverpool ONE means it's got an abundance of goodies that your family, mates (and you) are going to love. Pretty Green, Zara, Urban Outfitters and plenty more down towards St Peter’s Lane will get that shopping list shortened. There's plenty of toy shops (LEGO, Disney and The Entertainer) perfect for grabbing young family members a gift, and Debenhams, John Lewis and plenty of beauty and jewellery stores will get your parents smiling from ear to ear this Christmas.

For unusual stuff, you’ve got to head towards Bold Street (it got the nod from Lonely Planet as one of the best shopping streets in the country) - try News from Nowhere that sells alternative books in a charming little rickety interior (it’s like stepping back in time), Resurrection and Pop Boutique for vintage wares and Utility for quirky home stuff that you’re unlikely to find anywhere else. The Old Sweet Shop at the bottom of Bold Street is a great bet for some tasty little stocking fillers too.

Don’t forget Mathew Street and the MetQuarter - for designer brands and obligatory Beatles trinkets (hey, you can’t leave without buying at least one, right?).

10 days to go.. #GetChristmassy

Liverpool ONE Christmas Tree 🎄

We probably should have mentioned it above but we wanted to make it more special. As you’re whizzing by getting this and that, make sure to stop and look at our Christmas Tree emblazoned with 280 heart lights. It’s 30ft, so you won’t miss it. Now you know where it is, come back to see it at night and if you fancy taking full advantage of it, book a slot inside the tree - plenty of mulled wine and carol-oke awaits.

Lunch 😋

It’s the most wonderful time... for lunch! Make your way over to College Lane where you’ll have the choice of the Catalonian delight of Lunya, or the Mexican flavours of Wahaca. Both are incredible and should be tried at least once if you’re coming to Liverpool, but we’ll leave the choosing up to you (mainly because it’s so hard to choose). On the rare occasion where neither float your boat, Bold Street is only a short walk away - we recommend either Mowgli for Indian small plates or Bakchich for incredible Lebanese. Sorted.

A Lap Around the Rink at the Ice Festival ⛸️

One of the most Instagrammed spots in Liverpool is home to its very own Ice Festival this Christmas, and yep, it is as good as it sounds. Grab some skates to embark on the ultimate festive ice skating, or feel the freeze in the real Ice Bar, where temperatures hits below 0’c. Oh, and you best psych yourself up for the UK’s longest real Ice Slide. We’re all big kids here.

💡 Little Tip 💡

If you’ve got time, why not stop off at our contemporary photography gallery in the architecturally-modern Mann Island, Open Eye Gallery. Their exhibitions are always fascinating, and the minimal vibe in here is perfect for those looking for an Instagrammable interior. With it being free, why not? Their independent shop is worth a look too - browse the British Journal of Photography and the cabinets brimming with specialised, colourful analogue cameras and accessories. Students get 10% off too - win!

Catch a show

Whilst you’re down by the waterfront, catch this year’s festive spectacular, Peter Pan at the Echo Arena Auditorium. Follow the boy who refuses to grow up and his fairy sidekick Tinkerbell. With a sprinkling of magical fairy dust, watch Peter and his new friends fly out the nursery window and over London to Neverland. A great panto which will get you in the festive mood.

DINNER 🍴

Yaass, it’s dinner time. Not only does the Albert Dock look extra fabulous this time of year thanks to all of the sparkles reflected in the Mersey and Dock waters, but it’s got a pretty decent selection of restaurants too. PANAM has amazing food all year round but their Christmas menu is something else, and Revolucion de Cuba is always a winner. Stay for a while longer after your food to enjoy the amazing ambience and live music of either place - yes, they do have the odd confetti shower at Rev De Cuba (it's a Cuban Christmas in here) and yes, we are jealous.

LATE 💃

The night is still certainly young and you came here for a good time - the next stop has to be up to the Cavern Quarter. No trip can be without a visit to the beating heart of Liverpool’s iconic music scene - the Cavern Club. There’s live music on every night, so there’ll be no shortage of moving and having a look at all the memorabilia on display while you’re at it. While you’re on the famous street of Mathew, grab a pint at The Grapes too, it’s one of the most famous Liverpool pubs - where you’ll bump into anything from politicians to filmmakers, writers, artists and musicians, and get to sit at the exact table where the Fab 4 mulled over lyrics with a few drinks way back when.

No doubt the whole street will be buzzing with festive vibes, so just see where the wind takes you.

DAY 2

BREKKIE/BRUNCH 🍳

Okay, you had a late night but it was so worth it - the Christmas break can’t carry on today without first scoring a decent brunch/brekkie; agreed? On the edge of the Commercial District you’ll find HUS - a dream of minimal chic furniture and the best Scandi breakfast and brunches in the city. The menu is full of all the classics with some little twists that you can choose depending on your mood.

If you're closer towards Bold Street, stop off at Love Thy Neighbour to fill your boots. Buddha Bowls, superfood smoothies and delicious all day breakfasts will have you sorted (plus the street art on the side of the building needs a look-in too).

CHRISTMAS MARKETS 🎁

If you’ve never seen St George’s Hall before, Christmas time is the perfect place to catch that first glimpse. 40 traditional festooned Christmas cabins cascade across its plateau, making it a very Christmassy scene indeed. You’ll find handmade jewellery, festive decorations and edible gifts here, plus that all important mulled wine and cider stall.

💡 Little Tip 💡

If you came to Liverpool wanting a nice panoramic cityscape snap - you're in luck. There's loads of options. But luckily, there's one is just round the corner from the Christmas Markets, and it's FREE. Head up to the top of Central Library's balcony where you'll be able to catch some gorgeous views of the Christmassy city below you, good eh? If you're keen on getting a few diffrent perspectives of the city, we suggest hopping on the Radio City Tower Viewing Gallery, orrr (if you're ready to brave the winter) heading up to the Top of the Tower at Liverpool Cathedral too. All epic and all a complete must when the city looks so good at Christmas - even better when it's getting dark.

CHINA TOWN 🐲

Next, you’ll be heading over to the ever-cool independent hub of Baltic Triangle but first, you’ll be passing Chinatown which is just as important to see. You’ll be stopped in your tracks by our beloved Chinese Imperial Arch (the largest outside of China). This arch was actually given to us by Shanghai as a beautiful gift (we’re twin cities), and you'll see 200 dragons etched on this spectacular structure as you pass through the arch into the realms of Nelson Street. During Chinese New Year in February the streets are lit up with colour dragons and smiling faces and at Christmas, it feels magical.

Go a little to the right and you’ll come across the holy grail of bagels...where bagels aren’t just for breakfast, they’re for life. The Bagelry. Buy yourself a rainbow bagel if you know what’s good for you. 🌈

💡 Little Tip 💡

No doubt you’ll come across the all-famous ‘Liver Bird Wings’ street art on the wall as you make your way down Jamaica Street. It’d be rude not to stop and take a pic - you might want to bring a halo with you so that you can look quite the *Liverpool Angel* especially for Christmas, though a normal snap should do.

RED BRICK VINTAGE 🛒

A pinch of last minute shopping never hurt anyone, and you’ll LOVE Red Brick Vintage. It's not just a ginormous vintage warehouse - it's an experience. A treasure trove of whacky stuff, we’ve come across everything from real traffic light fixtures to an old vaulting horse (the type you saw in PE) - but there’s also tonnes of stuff like incredible vinyls, kitsch kitchenware and SO MANY AMAZING CLOTHES. You could spend a whole day here and never get bored.

BALTIC MARKET 🌮

The street food revolution has well and truly arrived in Liverpool! Specialising in bringing the best street food of the Liverpool independent eateries all under one roof, all hail the Baltic Market. Fancy an Indian? No probs. Pizza? Check. Vegan and veggie junk food? You bet! This place will welcome you with open arms and you'll never see street food the same way (delicious delicious delicious).

They also have numerous independent Farmers Markets happening ad hoc where you can get the freshest and most delicious food in the whole of Merseyside. Grab a seat on one of the long tables, head to your choice of stall and grab a drink at the bar on the way back to your pew - this is food markets, Liverpool style.

LATE 💃🏾

This is it, it’s your last night and you want to make it count. You might want to stick around the Baltic Triangle and visit some of our warehouse delights - Camp & Furnace, Constellations or Hinterlands are some of our favourites.

Or you can head for Seel Street - the jewel in the Liverpool party crown. Along Seel Street you’ll find our go-tos, Alma De Cuba (a converted chapel that has petal showers and cuban dancers every Friday), Kazimier Gardens (a botanical inside-outside bar of electro delight) and Santa Chupitos just around the corner (try the Five Dollar Shake, please!).

The ultimate festive night out though has to include Miracle on Seel Street at venue 83, a secret venue tucked above Salt Dog Slims and 81LTD on Seel Street will be transformed into a festive wonderland.

It’s also worth seeing what’s on at Invisible Wind Factory - a multi-disciplinary space that holds amazing gigs thanks to it looking like it’s just flown out of another galaxy. Wherever you go, you'll probably have one of the best nights ever. But don’t just take our word for it, take Lonely Planets.
