If you’re looking for a special venue to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, special occasion or just fancy a night out then Lu Ban Restaurant in the Baltic Triangle is the place to go.

Specialising in Chinese cuisine from the Tianjin region in China the dishes renowned chef, Dave Critchley produces are out of this world.

From the bar area to the main restaurant space, the Tianjin Dining Room, Chef’s Table, The Food Lab and the Wine Room there are so many options for you to plan the perfect evening out with a difference for your family or friends.

To give you a bit more of an idea of what Lu Ban is about we went along to see all the rooms, sample a few of their beautiful dishes and see what social distancing measures they have put in place to make it a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Lu Ban Restaurant is a beautiful open space with a whole host of new safety measures implemented perfect for social distancing. Tables have been spaced out to meet Government guidelines, hand sanitiser stations are located throughout the venue, your server will remain distanced but always on hand to offer any help and drink orders will be taken from your table. The menu at Lu Ban has also been adapted to minimise the amount of times the servers need to visit your table but that won’t distract from the excellent food and brilliant service you will receive.

The main restaurant has plenty of menu options for you to choose from. Serving delicious dishes inspired by the Tianjin region of China, your experience at Lu Ban will not disappoint. From their main menu to a tasting menu, banquets including a vegan version, Gin Sum Thursdays, Weekend bottomless brunch and a Little Lu Ban menu for the kids too -  there’s so much to choose from. To find out more about what features on each menu visit their website here

Aside from the main restaurant there is also a series of exclusive dining rooms ideal for groups and family reunions to celebrate missed occasions following the lockdown period.

Each room will follow social distancing guidelines and they will do their best to cater to your individual needs. To find out more about what each room has to offer we have outlined the details and unique features of each one below.

The Tianjin Dining Room is perfect for an intimate dining experience. You and your guests get exclusive use of the luxury room away from other diners for an exclusive feast. With social distancing measures being in place it means that you can easily have two families sitting at a distance around the table for those special celebrations. The Tianjin Room has its own special banquet menu that can be adapted to suit your party’s preference and dietary requirements. Featuring everything from Colchester rock Oysters to Aromatic Jian Salmon, Crisp Kao Pork Belly, Sui Mai and Five Flavour Cucumber it’s a feast fit for everyone.

The Chef’s Table is a close up dining experience like no other. You will have a rare insight into the workings of the Lu Ban kitchen with a front row seat to all the action. With your own exclusive access, you and your guests will enjoy dining right in the middle of it all. Chat with the chefs, learn some top tips, take in all the smells and sounds and savour the dishes Chef Dave Critchley and the rest of the team will prepare and serve right in front of you.

The table can host up to 6 guests making it a perfect size for an intimate family celebration. There is plenty of room between the table and the kitchen to keep everyone safe and socially distant whilst still being able to see all the action.

The Food Lab is a bit more of an informal style of dining but you still get your own space for the exclusive use of you and your guests. It’s called the Food Lab because it looks a little bit like a lab. Expect glass beakers, food chemistry and even that skeleton you had in the corner of your science lessons in school!

The long white marble table becomes your dining area, experiment bench and plays an important role when it comes to dessert - we’re keeping that bit a surprise for you. So you don’t get lost with all the cooking, you’ll have your own personal chef that will talk you through all the ingredients and recipes to help you make your own chinese feast. With 12 courses on the menu there are plenty of opportunities for you to add your own twist to Lu Ban’s incredible dishes.

The large table means there is plenty of room for social distancing and can accommodate two families at a social distance too.

The Wine Room at Lu Ban is perfect for groups and can accommodate two families at a social distance. It’s set aside from the menu restaurant area with a huge window to separate the two spaces that can be discreetly closed off for full privacy. Backing onto the wine cellar, this room is a luxurious space with elegant decor, a long dining table and comfortable leather chairs. The special thing about the Wine Room is that they match the wine to whatever dishes you order so everything is made to suit your palate.

On top of the incredible menus and exclusive dining experiences Lu Ban has also recently launched their Gin Sum menu on Thursdays. You can enjoy a beautiful set menu of five dim sum dishes with two amazing gin cocktails. For more information on Gin Sum Thursday visit their website here
