Whether you’re a regular visitor to Liverpool or you’ve never been before, it might be more familiar than you think.

As we enter into a national lockdown and are unable to visit Liverpool, we can still spot some very famous Liverpool locations on some of the biggest TV shows and films around.

For the past few years the streets of Liverpool have been transformed into everything from 1920’s Birmingham to Washington DC in the sixties. So if you fancy catching a glimpse of the city from the comfort of your own homes, here’s some of the Netflix and Amazon Prime shows and films that were shot in Liverpool.

The iconic BBC drama might be set in 1920’s Birmingham but much of the drama was actually filmed up in Liverpool. The series follows the Shelby family and their life of crime post World War One and features Powis Street as Watery Lane, the home of the Peaky Blinders, Stanley Dock as well as scenes shot in Port Sunlight, St George’s Hall and Formby beach.

Back in August 2018 Liverpool’s iconic Three Graces doubled up as Washington DC as The Crown filmed series three in the city. The series that follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II also took over North John Street and The Strand, well and truly giving Liverpool the royal seal of approval.

The Stranger launched on Netflix at the start of 2020 and every man and their dog were hooked. Although the thrilling series was mainly set in Manchester, Webster Road in between Toxteth and Wavertree became the endangered home of one of the lead characters. One episode even saw an unmistakable Merseyrail train make an appearance...see if you can spot it!

In this Amazon Prime original series a man invents a brain implant that allows you to see other people's thoughts. The series, although set in London, was filmed across Liverpool City Centre. Iconic places such as Hope Street and Great Georges Dockway all make an appearance throughout the show. Imagine if you could implant something allowing you to see Liverpool everyday…

It goes without saying that a film about John Lennon would be filmed in Liverpool right?! Whilst much of the film may have been shot in London, some of the famous Liverpool locations to pop up in the film include St George’s Hall, Mendips, Woolton Picture House and Liverpool Cathedral.

Alright, so the name is definitely a bit of a give away with this one but as you might have guessed, Hollywood blockbuster Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool was filmed across Liverpool back in 2016. Locations such as the Playhouse Theatre and the Mersey Ferry played themselves on screen whilst Liverpool City Centre also doubled for London and New York!

Kenneth Cranham and Jamie Bell in “Film stars don’t die in Liverpool” by Paul McGuigan (2017) . . . This picture was taken in September 2018 in a pub called Ye Cracke in Liverpool. It’s where Peter Turner (Jamie Bell) and his father (Kenneth Cranham) have a quiet pint together just after the terminally ill Gloria Grahame (Annette Benning) has moved into the family’s home. Ye Cracke is a legendary pub which opened in the 19th century and has been a favourite hang out for a certain Mr. John Lennon. . . . #happybirthday #jamiebell #bornthisday #filmstarsdontdieinliverpool #kennethcranham #annettebening #paulmcguigan #cinematography : #ulapontikos #lionsgate #sonypictures #gloriagrahame #biographical #drama #pub #scene #scenehunting #moviescene #liverpool #greatbritain #gb #travel #movielocation #onlocation #onset #film #movie #johnlennon #beatles #thebeatles
