Arts & Culture

Did you know that Liverpool has more museums and galleries than any other UK city outside of the capital?

Many of these are also free to enter. The city region also boasts fifteen theatres and halls, ranging from the modern Liverpool M&S Bank Arena to the Art Deco style Philharmonic Hall, home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Liverpool Empire Theatre is the second largest theatre in the country and showcases the best in local, national and international talent, often hosting shows direct from London’s West End. Liverpool’s Royal Court Theatre always guarantees a great night of entertainment, hosting great comedies and musicals throughout the year, with largely local casts and crews. The Everyman and Playhouse theatres provide an eclectic mix of forward-thinking theatre in great settings, with the Everyman being awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2014 for best new building of the year.

Just 5 minutes from Liverpool’s Lime Street Station is the beautiful William Brown Street, where you’ll find a delightful cluster of culture including the Walker Art Gallery (the national gallery of the North), World Museum, Liverpool Central Library and St John’s Gardens.

Down on the waterfront at Albert Dock is Tate Liverpool, the home of contemporary art in the North, staging major international exhibitions throughout the year.

Then there’s the Liverpool Biennial, the international festival dedicated to contemporary art from all over the world, taking place every two years and bringing a number of key pieces of public artwork to the city both during and outside of the festival.

Just a short train or ferry ride away in Wirral is the dainty village of Port Sunlight home of Sunlight Soap and the Lever Brothers. The Lady Lever Art Gallery houses Lord Leverhulme’s personal collection, featuring a wide range of fine and decorative arts.
