Music
This is a city that moves to its own rhythm; a city that’s very heart beats with the sound of music. We’re a UNESCO City of Music, famous for its Mersey Beat and for those four lads that changed the music world forever - but that’s not all.
No Beatles fan can leave Liverpool unturned, and a pilgrimage to the city where it all began for those four boys is non-negotiable. A trip to The Beatles Story at the Albert Dock will journey you through The Beatles lives with its fascinating memorabilia, starting from their humble beginnings to the present day.
Ever fancied discovering the story of British music? Through costumes, instruments, performance and memorabilia, the British Music Experience at Liverpool’s Pier Head brings the last 50 years of music right before your eyes. From Freddie Mercury to Dusty Springfield, Adele and even the Spice Girls, Britain’s musical prowess never looked so colourful.
You can’t come to Liverpool and not visit the legendary cellar that has seen seven incredible decades of music (including The Beatles first performance on 9th February 1961). The Cavern Club is still the beating heart of Liverpool Beatle-Mecca of Mathew Street, while a combined tour of Lennon and McCartney’s childhood homes - Mendips and 20 Forthlin Road - will allow you to explore where the boys met, composed and rehearsed many of their earliest songs.
The Liverpool music scene also includes the world-class M&S Bank Arena on the waterfront, which has attracted massive names like Bob Dylan, Beyonce and Paul McCartney. in the past.
And who could come to Liverpool and overlook the many festivals we host every year (many even being free). Liverpool International Music Festival (LIMF), Africa Oye, Sound City and International Beatleweek are just four of our favourites, but we’ll let you discover the rest.
Have we mentioned we’re also home to one of the finest orchestras in the country? The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, whose home is at the beautiful art deco Philharmonic Hall, frequently play in the city, while artists like Michael Kiwanuka, Squeeze and Goldie also frequent the Hall.
But don’t get us wrong - it’s not all about the big venues here. Many smaller venues throughout Liverpool host live music nights and open mic nights (we recommend checking out Arts Club, Buyers Club and The Magnet). Wherever you go, you’re never too far away from music in this city.
