About

Port Sunlight Museum & Garden Village, ‘Small Visitor Attraction of the Year’ at the 2014 Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards, is a unique and beautiful 19th century garden village created in 1888 by founder William Hesketh Lever, solely for his Sunlight Soap factory workers in Port Sunlight Village.

Today the village is looked after by the Port Sunlight Village Trust, which is an independent charitable trust responsible for the management and maintenance of the village, and who spends over £2 million each year on building and landscape maintenance programmes, heritage conservation and lifelong learning programmes for residents and visitors.

Port Sunlight Museum, a trademark of the trust, celebrates the unique heritage of this industrial landmark with its – people, formal planning, architecture and parks & gardens – from its foundation in 1888 to life in the village today.

For those wanting to explore the village, the museum offers a variety of tour options. Choose from a multimedia tour, guided village tour led by a Port Sunlight guide or a self-guided walking trail taking you on a circular route starting and ending at the museum. The museum is filled with a mix of special exhibitions, evolving displays, interactive touch screens and film footage from past into present day.

Refreshments are available from ‘tea’, a contemporary tea room located above the museum, open daily, the tea room caters for individuals and small groups (large groups must pre-book) serving a delicious selection of freshly prepared sandwiches, light lunches, award-winning cakes and a fresh brew of Unilever’s ‘PG tips’, supporters of the tea room.

Offering a full yearly programme of events, Port Sunlight Museum is a great day out for couples, families and groups. If visiting the museum you may also like to take in the Lady Lever Art Gallery just a short walk away and the Port Sunlight Garden Centre, both venues offer different aspects on Port Sunlight giving you a complete feel about village life.
