Originally a busy, sandstone quarry producing the stone for building works as far apart as Liverpool Cathedral and New York Harbour, Runcorn Hill is now a Green Flag Award winning local nature reserve with 32 hectares of natural landscapes and formal grounds. These include woodland walks, disused quarry, orienteering trails and north Cheshire's largest surviving stretch of heathland. The site is also home to tennis courts, bowling and putting greens, a bandstand, cafe and a visitor centre.
In December 2012 it was amongst nine parks in England to have been awarded grant-funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund (BIG) as part of the 'Parks for People Project'. The £1.3 million lottery money has recently provided new visitor facilities including an impressive cafe incorporating toilets and a community space and a new lakeside pavilion will become the home of Runcorn Model Boat Club.
