An amazing secret underground WWII bunker on Rumford Street in Liverpool. Western Approaches played a pivotal role in the Battle of the Atlantic. Walk through hidden rooms and discover the stories locked in the wartime bunker that protected the tactics and secrets of the British Armed Forces plotting to protect Britain's sea supply routes and aid the Allied victory.
Glimpse the documents and tools the forces used to monitor enemy convoys and inform the British government of their findings whilst keeping their intelligence secret from the enemy, including one of only two surviving wartime phones which has a direct connection to the war cabinet in London.
Experience for yourself where commanders, WRNS and WAAF personnel worked every day and night in the Map Room, the nerve centre of the Battle of the Atlantic. Here they monitored convoy routes and vital shipping lines, and pin-pointed enemy locations on a huge map; total accuracy was necessary to enable the Royal Navy to contact and destroy the enemy.
Western Approaches is a step back in time and visitors are invited to immerse themselves in all the rooms. sitting at desks where the original bunker occupants worked.
Western Approaches offers private guided tours ideal for groups, VIP tours can also include a fascinating glimpse into some of the secret rooms which are not open to the public, such as the staff sleeping quarters where you can see the separate rooms, wardrobes and an old roll top bath.
All tours and visits include free hot drinks. Prices are from £9 to £20per person for a guided tour.
Exit the M62 at jct 4, follow the city centre sign on Edge Lane (A5047). Edge Lane will change into Mount Vernon, then Pembroke Rd. Pembroke Rd will change into London Rd stay on London Rd till it ends. Turn Right onto Churchhill Way (Elevated Rd) stick to the left hand Lane. This road turns into Dale St, then Water St. Rumford St is situated on your right.
There is pay and display parking on Rumford Street in front of the museum and plenty of other car parks nearby.
