Angel Field Festival 2023 presents a double bill electronic music concert by Turkish musical prodigy Elif Yalvaç and by DiN records modular synthesis duo d'Voxx
Born and raised in Turkey, Elif (née Hazal Elif Yalvaç) grew up surrounded by a wide range of music. At an early age, she was fascinated as much by sound as by music, and she picked up the guitar.
Following her BA degree in Translation and Interpreting from Istanbul University, Elif earned her masters in Sonic Arts from Istanbul Technical University (MIAM). She has presented compositions and performed in Turkey and across Europe, most notably at Secret Garden Party (UK) in 2016, as well as throughout Nordic countries, particularly in Iceland. Her debut EP CloudScapes was self-released in July 2016, and her debut LP, L’appel du Vide, was released by UK label Curated Doom in November 2018. Her album Mountains Become Stepping Stones was released by the USA-based label NNA Tapes on December 4, 2020. The album received international acclaim, including reviews on the Guardian, The Wire, and Electronic Sound Magazine UK. Her latest album Green Drift was released on September 23, 2022 with Expert Sleepers, a modular synth company and label.
Alongside her solo projects, she has collaborated with others particularly including Darkroom and Moving Furniture Records. She leads her experimental rock project Diaries of Destruction with Michael Bearpark and Arber, guesting Bryan Beller.
Elif’s compositions embrace opposites: microsound glitches and slow builds; celestial beauty and abrasive energy. Her songs are created using a vast array of instruments, including guitar, synthesizers, and Game Boy, as well as her own software sound design tools and field recordings. Inspired by computer game audio, Elif extensively studied chip music as part of her master’s thesis, entitled “Creating Music ‘Inside The Box’: Do Chiptune’s Limitations Have Aesthetic and Creative Value?”
Endorsed by Arts Council England, Elif Yalvaç is based in the UK with a Global Talent Visa. She currently performs regularly and works on her music releases and teaches electronic and produced music at GSMD, while delivering workshops on her music research around the UK.
d’Voxx is a live electronic music project courtesy of Paul Borg and Nino Auricchio. Using only new modular instruments for live performance works, they explore the post-digital landscape working within the constraints of an analogue domain. d’Voxx rejects the notion of preservation for a more transitory paradigm. Seeking to explore the space between live performance and recorded artefact, and through their recordings they document the collaborative progress of the artist, and the new modular instrument. They have evolved this approach through a series of acclaimed live performances at festivals and expos across Europe.
The duo's latest album, entitled 1984, is a musical interpretation of George Orwell’s novel. It has been produced with the support and approval of the George Orwell estate and on it spoken quotes from the novel are interwoven into the music. This new body of work contrasts starkly with the optimism of d'Voxx's first album, and reflects the troubling divisions opening up in global societies and the worrying shift toward more extreme ideologies and nationalism.
Paul Borg is a double platinum award-winning music producer who established an early career profile working alongside pioneers of the emerging UK dance and electronic music scene such as Danny D, Derek B, KLF and Rebel MC, while also engineering and re-mixing for US artists including Was Not Was, Joyce Sims, Gang Starr and The Roots. Paul also recorded and mixed 5 albums with Japanese DJ collective United Future Organization for Giles Peterson’s Brownswood label, and continues to write and produce music for film and television throughout the world. Paul is a senior lecturer in music technology at the University of West London where he also teaches new modular synthesis.
Nino Auricchio is an electronic music composer, producer and arranger who has worked for Sony Music, BMG and numerous dance and soul labels. Nino has had success as part of the funk act Funkshone, releasing records globally through Skyline Records, P-Vine in Japan with work remixed by Kenny Dope Gonzalez. Nino composes library music and has work licensed by Red Bull for the World BBoy Championships and the US film, Growing Reason. He is a senior lecturer in sound engineering at the University of West London and is undertaking a PhD in electronic music composition.
