Brittle Heart Liverpool

A significant historical anniversary and year of momentous change is being commemorated in this poignant season of work.

Brittle Heart marks both the centenary of the end of the First World War – the ‘war to end all wars’ – and of women over 30 winning the right to vote, in a programme which will look back to the world of 1918 and consider comparisons with our world now.

At the heart of this autumn’s Brittle Heart will be a very special performance of Benjamin Britten’s mighty War Requiem, featuring the poetry of Wilfred Owen.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra presented the requiem in Liverpool Cathedral as part of the city’s Capital of Culture celebrations a decade ago.

Now the RLPO is set to reprise its stunning performance in the awe-inspiring sandstone landmark, this time in a symbolic partnership with the Hannover NDR Philharmonic.

Musicians from both orchestras will be joined by the highly-acclaimed Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and other choruses, along with a line-up of internationally-renowned soloists and conductor Andrew Manze – a firm favourite with Philharmonic Hall audiences.

The unmissable concert will take place on November 10, the eve of Armistice Day on which, a century ago, the guns fell silent across the shell-pocked, shell-shocked wastes of the Western Front.

Sadly Owen, the Birkenhead-raised poet whose powerful verses suffuse the requiem, did not live to see the end of the conflict, dying days before the peace was signed.

Organisers of the Brittle Heart season are also working with bodies including 14-18 NOW, the national arts programme commemorating the centenary of the First World War and which was responsible for Weeping Window poppies at St George’s Hall and Liverpool’s two dazzling Dazzleships.

Tickets for the War Requiem go on sale this spring.

A season of work to commemorate both the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One as well as women’s right to vote, will look at the world a century ago and aim to draw comparisons with 2018 and the future. The armistice commemoration will be led by a unique collaboration between the orchestras of two UNESCO Cities of Music in a performance of Britten’s War Requiem.

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Hannover NDR Philharmonic, under the baton of Andrew Manze, are joining together to mark this significant historical anniversary with their choirs and an international soloist line-up. They will perform Britten’s great work, which uses texts from World War One poet Wilfred Owen. It will take place in the awe-inspiring setting of Liverpool Cathedral on 10 November (the day before Remembrance Sunday), preceded the week before, with a performance in Hannover’s Grosses Sendesaal concert hall.

Brittle Heart will run between 5th and 11th November 2017.
