The Terracotta Warriors are coming to Liverpool.

About

Figures from China’s famous Terracotta Army are on show in a UK museum outside London for the first time in more than 30 years. The must-see exhibition at Liverpool’s World Museum will reveal almost 1,000 years of China’s history and coincides with the China Dream season of cultural commissions.

Due to popular demand, visitors will be able to experience this exhibition after-hours at late night openings on Fridays and Saturdays throughout August, with last entry at 8pm.

Incredible finds from one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries is on display in Liverpool, in a cultural coup of immense proportions. China’s First Emperor and the Terracotta Warriors is coming to the city’s World Museum from 9 February to 28 October 2018, featuring more than 180 spectacular artefacts, many of which have never been on show in the UK before.

The vast burial site of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was discovered by chance in 1974 near X’ian, the ancient capital of China. Since then, archaeologists have unearthed more than 2,000 figures, each with individual facial features, clothing and hair, whose job it was to serve the First Emperor in the afterlife.

The burial site has attracted tourists from all over the globe to see the Terracotta Warriors, but in 2018 you don’t need to hop on a plane to find yourself up close and personal with this eighth wonder of the ancient world, because China’s greatest national treasures will be right here in Liverpool.

Beginning 2,000 years ago, the exhibition will tell the story of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang’s rise to power, and reveal the legacy of his achievements in the succeeding Han Dynasty.

Not only will the life-sized warrior figures and other Chinese national treasures enthral visitors, but specially-commissioned immersive technology will also magically bring the exhibition to life, transporting visitors back to ancient China.

The arrival of the Terracotta Warriors follows World Museum’s successful Mayas exhibition in 2015, and the reopening of its extensive Ancient Egypt gallery and Mummy Room in 2017.

World Museum’s Terracotta Warriors exhibition is a major part of Liverpool’s 2018 celebrations, marking 10 years since the city held the title of European Capital of Culture 2008. The exhibition also coincides with Chinese New Year festivities, and the start of China Dream, a nine-month celebration of contemporary Chinese culture and art.

This exhibition was organised by National Museums Liverpool, United Kingdom and the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau and Shaanxi History Museum (Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Promotion Centre), People’s Republic of China.
