Light Piano 2.0 XL is part of the 2021 'River of Light' programme. For full details of this year's River of Light, visit the dedicated page.

Artist collective Kleurbleur creates visual presence ranging from theatre and dance performance to exhibitions and company events. Starting in 2012, Kleurbleur develops, produces, and installs artworks, projects, and exhibitions. Each project has its own unique challenge but the artists are always working on the crossroads of spatial-, light- and interaction design intersecting with music, video-mapping and graphic design.

The cubes placed in this spatial composition are connected to the keys of the piano, meaning that Light Piano 2.0 XL can be regarded as both a work of art and an instrument.

In this installation the sound of the piano is being mobilised and visualised, allowing the audience not only to play the piano but also to play the light. The colours of the cubes surrounding the piano become for example blue, light blue, purple - responding to the piano playing.

Description of the artwork for those who are visually impaired

The cubes placed in this spatial composition are connected to the keys of the piano, meaning that Light Piano 2.0 XL by the artists of Kleurbleur can be regarded as both a work of art and an instrument.

In this installation the sound of the piano is being mobilised and visualised, allowing the audience not only to play the piano but also to play the light. The colours of the cubes surrounding the piano become for example blue, light blue, purple - responding to the piano playing.

The immersive, interactive site-specific installation Light Piano 2.0 XL is specially set up for ‘River of Light Trail’ (and is around 10 metres (33 foot) wide, 3,5 metres (11,5 foot) high and 28 metres (92 foot) deep). Built up with six V-shaped trusses, of which three are installed on the ground and three on hanging. The piano is positioned behind the first truss on the ground. The piano player is surrounded by the cubes, and visible when the cubes near the player lights up. The V-shaped trusses consist of dozens of cubes total which are directly interacting to the keys of a piano. The cubes are made of plastic and LED's so they can withstand extreme weather, as the work travels the world. When the piano is not played the lights are off.

Description of the soundscape for those who are hearing impaired

In this installation the sound of the piano is being visualized, allowing the audience not only to play the piano but also to play the light. The artwork is therefore a visualisation of audio, the behaviour of the light responds directly to the piano playing. The result is a special kind of instrument that resonates with ears, eyes and heart.

The music you hear depends on who is playing the keys. The audience is invited to participate actively in the artwork, by playing the piano. For example, the artwork was part of an opening act of Oscar Fischinger's expo in the EYE Film Museum in Amsterdam, playing Chopin's 'Fantaisie Impromptu', performed by Arion de Munck.

Light Piano 2.0 XL is supported by Global Streets and FESTIVAL.ORG. We will be working with local arts organisation Open Culture to programme a selection of local pianists from across the community who will perform a diverse range of live pieces throughout the festival duration. Please keep an eye on our social media channels where we reveal further information.

Light Piano 2.0 XL has been programmed by Open Culture, who produce projects and events that create platforms for artists and to make the arts more welcoming and accessible to the public. Some of their other projects include Tickle the Ivories - the annual street pianos in Liverpool ONE, LightNight - Liverpool's annual one night arts festival , the Winter and Summer Arts Markets at Liverpool Cathedral. Open Culture were thrilled to create this programme, showcasing some of the incredible and diverse up and coming and established talent from across the city region. The pianists are excited to share their talent with you. Enjoy!
