Light Night 2017 at Red Brick Vintage in Liverpool's Baltic Triangle

About

LightNight returns on Friday 18 May 2018, unlocking the doors of Liverpool’s best-loved and lesser-known arts, culture and heritage venues late into the night. A culture crawl like no other, visitors of all ages are invited to follow an unforgettable trail of events in celebration of the city’s year-round world-class cultural offer.

LightNight showcases the creative lifeblood of Liverpool, presenting new and ambitious artistic commissions amidst a vibrant programme of more than 100 events including everything from concerts, exhibitions, hands-on workshops and dance to street performance, theatre and talks. It’s the perfect chance to enjoy the bustling atmosphere and experience the city’s cultural offer after-hours with friends and family.

This LightNight we will question and reflect upon the transformative nature of the self and the world around us. Understood as a significant change in people or place, ‘transformation’ is happening all around us: visible or invisible, turbulent and political, personal and emotional, for better or for worse.

The full programme has been released and audiences can buy their festival guide from the following outlets for £3. Sale proceeds will go towards funding the festival and help organisers Open Culture to keep it free.

LightNight is always a memorable night, and here we round up some of the special moments audiences can experience on their culture crawl around the city...

LightNight Commission The Imago is a new installation and performance by In Atoms. Through slow and blissful loops of sound, dialogue, and film footage, The Imago promises to be a moving and immersive work, telling the life cycle of a moth as a personal history between two people.

Metamorphosis: John Petch x OMD sees the historical Queen Avenue, a small alley off Castle Street come to life with a street party including a surprise musical performance, and food and drink stalls and late night gallery opening at dot-art.

For night owls the LightNight After Party: DANCE4MATION is the perfect way to close the festival on a high with an eclectic line up of female DJs to fire up the dancefloor! Legendary archivist Sandi Hughes sets the tone with party tracks cut from 1975 to 2005; followed by vital global grooves from Giovanna (SisBis), before Manara’s energetic Bollywood/Punjabi pop/club/hip-hop melting moves of south London carry us into the early hours. £4 advance

The Polar Bear Waltz is a moving and atmospheric new commission from composer Patrick Dineen that sees the last polar bear adrift on the ocean, singing in heartfelt remembrance of a world he once knew devastated by climate change.

Talking Stalls is a personal and interactive experience set within the ladies toilets at Liverpool Medical Institution. A conversation between toilet stalls and adding to the ‘latrinalia’ graffiti the piece explores notions of identity, gender, and space.

Headstrung Theatre are always a hit with families and The Cockatrice will see their latest imaginative expedition into the forgotten corners of the animal kingdom. This interactive puppetry performance at Tate Liverpool will be an intimate performance for a limited audience.

The Mersey Swing Lindy Hop Social at Liverpool Town Hall invites everyone to pick up some lively swing dance moves in a workshop, including the Lindy Hop and the Charleston followed by a dance soundtracked by the hottest swing bands of the jazz era.

The well-loved Sense of Sound Singers return to LightNight for a special performance in the stunning Lady Chapel at Liverpool Cathedral. Performing as a 9-piece ensemble they welcome Sub5 choir from Hannover to the city for what promises to be an captivating joint performance.

Vote 100: The Readers sees a hundred women from across the city reading the work of 100 women authors through the ages; from campaigners to poets marking 100 years since some of the first women won the right to vote.

Liverpool Carnival Company bring their rousing Brazilica Samba performance to the Albert Dock on the night, creating a mini carnival of music, dance and costume exploring the meeting of technology and creativity.

LUMA Creations present Drum Clash 2.0 on the Metropolitan Cathedral Piazza, a powerful drumming performance using light, rhythm and movement to show the heartbeat and power of the drum from the natural to the mechanical.

Merseyside Dance Initiative presents a processional performance outside Metropolitan Cathedral recreating the work of choreographer Pina Bausch. The Nelken Line is iconic of Bausch’s work, featuring repetitive movements representing the change of seasons.

The lively LightNight Ceilidh returns to St George’s Hall as a festival fundraising event, where enthusiastic dancers of all ages and abilities are invited to join in the fun with the live band.
