Liverpool's Waterfront at LightNight with a crowd of people watching a performance.

On May 21 May, LightNight is unlocking the doors of Liverpool’s best-loved and lesser-known arts, culture and heritage venues late into the night.

A culture crawl like no other, visitors of all ages are invited to follow an unforgettable trail of events in celebration of the city’s year-round world-class cultural offer.

LightNight invites audiences to stay up late, as our museums, galleries and studios throw open their doors to stage a free trail of special events for all ages, exploring the theme of Play. This year we’ll be presenting a hybrid programme with both ‘in-person’ and online events, exhibitions, talks and activities for all ages.

This year’s festival explores how Play can offer a space to create, re-imagine and find novel solutions to global problems.

Playfulness is not just essential to life, but to the creation of art. It is the medium in which great discoveries and advances in human achievement can be made. It is the method of the maker, the artist and the tinkerer. It is the tool of the scientist, the inner child, and the ‘fool’. Through play we can test our ideas, expend surplus energy, exercise our faculties and compensate for unfulfilled desires.

In the restructuring of our lives we must make time for play. In a world rife with social, ecological and political inequalities, can play offer us a fun and inventive realm, where we have the space to re-shape the world around us for the better?

Find out more about the full line-up of free events on their website here.
