Prepare to be awe-struck as the moon comes to Birkenhead Town Hall’s magnificent Assembly Room for October half-term. Museum of the Moon by UK artist Luke Jerram brings the moon almost close enough to touch, in breath-taking detail.

Measuring seven metres in diameter, the mesmerising installation features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. Each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface.

Museum of the Moon is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones. The world-famous installation will be accompanied by a special programme of lunar-inspired events beneath it.

The moon has always inspired humanity. Over the centuries, the moon has been interpreted as a god and as a planet. It has been used as a timekeeper, calendar and been a source of light to aid nighttime navigation. Throughout history the moon has inspired artists, poets, scientists, writers and musicians the world over. The ethereal blue light cast by a full moon, the delicate crescent following the setting sun, or the mysterious dark side of the moon has evoked passion and exploration. Different cultures around the world have their own historical, cultural, scientific and religious relationships to the moon. And yet somehow, despite these differences, the moon connects us all.

Events Programme

MDI: One Small Step - Friday 8 November
MDI will come together with dance artists to present a large scale dance work, commemorating the wondrous half-centenary since Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle, with the addition of an adult contemporary dance class from Bebington.

There will be 5 performances on the hour from 1pm – 5pm, each running for 20 mins.

 

Museum of The Moon: Yogasmiths - Wednesday 13 November 
Start your day in peace and tranquility with yoga under Luke Jerram's stunning Museum of The Moon at Birkenhead Town Hall. Wirral's favourite Yogasmiths will guide you through this morning yoga session which will focus on yoga postures, perfecting alignment and breathing techniques to guide relaxation.  Tickets cost £10 and can be purchased by clicking here

 

18th Century Orchestra - Wednesday 13 November
Sit back and relax to one of the finest examples of baroque music in the country under the blissful Museum of The Moon. This is a ticketed performance. Tickets cost £18 + booking fee and can be purchased by clicking here.

Museum of the Moon is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Co-commissioned by a number of creative organisations brought together by Luke Jerram and Norfolk & Norwich Festival. These include: We The Curious, Kimmel Center, Lakes Alive, Provincial Domain Dommelhof, Brighton Festival, Greenwich+Docklands International Festival, Without Walls, Les Tombées de la Nuit, Rennes and Cork Midsummer Festival. The artwork has also been created in Councilship with the UK Space Agency, University of Bristol and The Association for Science and Discovery Centres.
