A brand-new, cutting-edge spectacle takes over Toxteth Reservoir. Technology and magic will become indistinguishable in Rewire, a new large-scale installation by Liverpool’s FACT (Foundation for Art and Creative Technology) and Leeds-based technical wizards Invisible Flock.

Rewire will take over the grand, iron-pillared interior of the building to create a playful and immersive participatory event which harnesses the Internet of Things.

Up to 100 people will enter the space at any one time and the responsive objects distributed among them will encourage the visitors to come together, with different levels of participation depending on just how much of a risk taker you are!

Everyone will experience a surprising and astonishing feast for the senses, with artists using the latest technology to conjure kinetic and digital landscapes populated by interactive storm clouds and illuminated with robotic lights.

Visitors will also head up to the roof of the 173-year-old building for a spectacular panoramic view of Liverpool and the Mersey, where there’s a unique chance to ‘play’ the city.

There’ll also be an app alongside the event where users can remotely experience and interact with elements and works featured in the event.

Invisible Flock plans to run 10 collaborative workshops, open to the public, in which people from the surrounding area of Toxteth can help build the installation and get hands-on experience of some of the technology behind the commission

Rewire is commissioned by FACT, in partnership with Liverpool City Council, Invisible Flock and Dingle 2000, a community heritage group which wants to bring the reservoir back in to use as a distinct cultural and tourist destination.

Toxteth Reservoir was previously transformed in the last Liverpool Biennial.
