Slaves Of Fashion: New Works by The Singh Twins

About

Indigo: The Colour of India (detail) © The Singh Twins: www.singhtwins.co.uk

The Walker Art Gallery's new exhibition, Slaves of Fashion: New Works by The Singh Twins, explores the history of Indian textiles, Empire, enslavement, luxury consumerism and the contemporary relevance of it all in the world today.

With emphasis on the relationship between Britain and India, the hidden details of Europe's colonial past and its legacies will be uncovered, including current debates that surround ethical trade and responsible consumerism.

This particular exhibition showcases almost 20 new artworks by the internationally-renowned artists. The Singh Twins - who are primarily known for their entirely hand-painted work in the Indian miniature tradition - will have their work combine traditional hand-painting techniques with digitally created imagery. The Slaves of Fashion series will include 11 digital fabric artworks displayed on lightboxes, with each one highlighting a completely different theme that relates to India's textile industry. Another 9 paper artworks of Slaves of Fashion will explore the relationship between trade, conflict and consumerism in an age of Empire and the modern day,

Also included in the Slaves of Fashion exhibition are 40 highlights from over 100 objects across Liverpool's museum collections.
