Smash the keys is a music festival where the piano takes centre stage

About

Look sharp and pull up a stool because it’s all about the piano in Liverpool this year.

Not only is the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic dedicating part of its season to the world’s favourite and most beautiful instrument, but the city itself is celebrating the humble piano on a grand scale like never before seen.

September’s Smash the Keys is a 10-day music festival that puts a single instrument centre stage in a celebration that is more than just classical. Instead, music fans can expect to hear all forms and genres, from jazz to grime, hip hop to swing – played by some of the biggest names in music.

The season will involve mass performance moments, new commissions, schools’ programmes and exhibitions.

Working with curator and composer Nick Smith, the Philharmonic will be presenting the winner of the prestigious Leeds Piano Festival’s first performance and also Emmy nominated piano duo Anderson Roe, to kick off the festival.

More details on the line up for the festival will be released in the spring.
