About

Liverpool is home to one of the largest collections of art galleries outside London – and one of them is celebrating a special birthday in 2018.

Tate Liverpool, a treasure trove of modern and contemporary art, is the big 30 and has put together a host of anniversary treats for art lovers.
One man has been a constant presence since the Albert Dock gallery opened its doors in 1988, and 15 million visitors have enjoyed his handiwork. Now, art handling manager Ken Simons has been asked to cast his expert eye over masterpieces in the Tate collection to create a bespoke exhibition of 30 artists’ works especially for the birthday.

Ken’s Show: Exploring the Unseen, which runs from April to June, features some of his favourite pieces, including Mark Rothko’s Light Red Over Black, and works by Turner, Mondrian, Hepworth, and Turner Prize winner Mark Wallinger.
It promises to be a mouth-watering start to the gallery’s anniversary.

Since Capital of Culture year’s Gustav Klimt exhibition drew crowds in their tens of thousands, Tate Liverpool has become renowned for its summer blockbuster shows putting a different slant on major artists’ work. And 2018 is no exception.

The spotlight shines on Klimt protégé Egon Schiele in the centenary year of his death, for an exhibition titled Life in Motion which explores motion in drawing and photography.

Rarely-seen drawings by the Viennese artist will be on display from May to September, in an exhibition paired with works by American photographer Francesca Woodman who, like Schiele, created daring images using the naked human form.

Later in 2018, the focus turns to another giant of modern art, painter, sculptor and film-maker Fernand Léger, a key figure of international modernity which led to the Pop Art phenomenon. More than 50 of his works will be shown in a must-see retrospective, opening in November.

To trace some of their most extraordinary exhibitions over the last 30 years, take a look here. Happy Birthday Tate Liverpool!
