Andrius Arutiunian The irresistible Powers of Silent Talking 2021

From a deep-sea video game powered by brain activity to lie-detecting artificial intelligence, FACT invites you to Uncertain Data. The new, interactive exhibition presents the work of four emerging artists who use art and technology to reveal how data controls our everyday lives.

On display from Wednesday 15 September until Sunday 3 October, the free exhibition presents new artworks created by artists in residence Andrius Arutiunian, Angela YT Chan, Tessa Norton and Yambe Tam.

Uncertain Data seeks to explore how our feelings and reactions affect how we navigate the world. Through immersive virtual reality, artificial intelligence and moving image, the exhibition uses technology to bring data to life: exposing hard facts to reveal the human stories beneath them and uncovering the uncertainty that our world is built on.

Each work provides an insight into the development of the artists’ practice during their residency at FACT, presenting their ideas and research as artworks which will continue to evolve beyond the residency.

The newly commissioned works include Deep Dive (2021) by Yambe Tam: an ambient video game experience combining virtual reality technology, gaming software and an EEG sensor which detects electrical activity in your brain. Using a headset, visitors embark on a meditative journey: a solo expedition through deep-sea ecosystems controlled by the power of the human mind.

Angela YT Chan’s artwork Rain Paradox (2021) presents a puzzling contradiction: whilst 77% of British adults believe the UK is a ‘wet and rainy’ country, in reality our water demand could soon outstrip supply. Using video, Chan contrasts official reports of climate change with ‘living room’ conversations about water scarcity and cultural water practices, archiving this specific moment within climate history with a view to revisiting our collective progress in generations to come.

Andrius Arutiunian presents The Irresistible Powers of Silent Talking (2021), an installation investigating automated deception recognition systems and their use in border surveillance. The work explores the algorithms behind virtual border agents: avatars which assess the facial micro-expressions of migrants entering the EU, making life-changing decisions based on their fixed inputs about truth or deceit. In this installation, the tables are turned and the system itself is put under duress: can AI detect its own lies?

Tessa Norton offers an insight into her ongoing research which focuses on post-colonial Anglo-Indian identity. Her forthcoming commission Dark Circles - to be shown at FACT in 2022 - will be a multimedia installation based around a new body of writing, found footage, and a soundtrack which considers how subcultures are cyclically forgotten and revived through generations.

Lesley Taker, Exhibitions Manager at FACT, said: “It has always been important for FACT to support emerging and early-career artists, but never so urgently as right now. We’ve had a host of digital residencies in the last 18 months, so we are very pleased to be able to present these diverse, incredibly timely, artworks in our galleries. As we continue to explore more flexible ways of making art and presenting outcomes, these experimental spaces become really important, especially for our visitors: to see how artists have been working and how they are using technology to critique, create and question.”

Yambe Tam, Angela YT Chan and Tessa Norton were awarded the Jerwood Arts / FACT Digital Fellowship in 2020. Funded by Jerwood Arts Development Programme Fund for 2020 and 2021, the annual fellowship and remote residency appoints 3 emerging artists, curators, creative technologists, critical thinkers or cultural activists, from any background, to support their potential as producers of the future. Andrius Arutiunian was awarded the European Media Art Residency Exchange (EMARE) in 2021 by the European Media Art Platform (EMAP). Arutiunian carried out his artist residency remotely with FACT, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
