Highlights from Rock 'n' Roll Marathon 2016
The Rock 'n' Roll marathon is taking place in Liverpool this May, but how much do you know about it?
Hopefully you’ve watched the above video and got an idea.
20 years ago the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon started in San Diego, California. The event now takes place in 27 cities across the world including Liverpool, Dublin, Nashville, Dallas, Madrid and San Antonio to name a few.
It’s now 4 years since the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon first came to Liverpool with 7,164 runners in 2014. In 2016 this had more than doubled at nearly 16,000 runners and in 2017 the team are expecting 19,500 runners. They must be doing something right, especially as they’re up for 3 awards at the UK Running Awards.
But what is it?
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is a marathon series including a full 26-mile marathon, 13-mile half marathon, 5K and a 1-mile fun run. The whole event takes place across a weekend in May, 27 – 28 May to be specific.
The races start at the Albert Dock and like many other marathon series, will run through the city taking in sights such as Strawberry field, the Liver Building, Penny Lane and so much more – it is 26 miles remember, there’s a lot to see!
But there’s more than just sights to see at the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon, obvs! Why did you think it was called the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon? There’s sounds too, with live music at every mile, this is why this is a marathon we have been talked into running. Yep. There’ll be a headliner act
We’re doing live social on the day, so if you can’t make the race you can see it all live on Facebook.
Alongside the actual running race is the RunFit Expo taking place at the Exhibition Centre, just 5 minutes from the race starting line. The RunFit Expo will run 26 – 27 May and is an opportunity for everyone from couch to 5kers to professional marathon runners to try, test and buy running and fitness products.
If you’re just a spectator to the marathon this time and fancy joining the craze, pop inside the RunFit Expo where you can sign up to more running events.
What’s even better is that it’s totally free to enter and there’s a confirmed list of exhibitors coming soon on the runFit Expo website.
According to the organisers, people go crazy for the medals! There are the five medals available. There’s the mile which features a yellow submarine, the 5K which is an amazing twist on the 50 Summers of Love logo design, the half marathon and the marathon that both feature a Liver bird and the Port of Liverpool building.
To receive the remix extra medal runners can run the 5K on Saturday and the Marathon/Half-Marathon on Sunday.
Friday 26 packets are available to collect from the RunFit Expo, Saturday 27 is 5K race and packet pickup and Sunday is the 1 mile, half marathon and marathon.
We’re sharing the news as it hits us, but we can’t wait to see the course map and hear who the headline act is!
