How you can host a sustainable event in Liverpool

Since first participating the GDS-Index in 2021 and ranking second to last, Liverpool has made incredible strides in sustainability. Having identified the gaps and working collaboratively, Liverpool accelerated ahead winning the award for the most improved destination at the 2023 GDS-Awards.

Liverpool itself is at the forefront of climate action, recognised as the world’s first “Accelerator City” for its climate initiatives. This accolade highlights the city’s pioneering efforts to decarbonise critical sectors such as live music and TV/film production. With a strong emphasis on progressive policies, innovative technologies, and sustainable practices, Liverpool is shaping a future-focused city with a clear ambition to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Use local suppliers

Think twice before shipping goods from overseas or via long road or rail journeys. You can easily source everything from AV and catering, to furniture and gifts at a local level. Liverpool Convention Bureau can connect you with the best suppliers in the local area saving on travel time and costs as well as minimising your carbon footprint.

Look for green accreditations

More venues and hotels in Liverpool City Region are working hard to ensure they operate in a more environmentally friendly way. Take a look at Green Meetings; an organisation that assesses and accredits the sustainable practices of businesses.

On their website, you’ll find which hotels and venues across Liverpool City Region are officially accredited. By choosing venues/hotels that have a third party environmental accreditation, you can be assured that they are a better option for the planet. It makes it easier for you to make a confident decision when you are looking for a venue that aligns with your own environmental goals.

Walk!

Liverpool is a walkable city and we encourage all delegates to walk between their conference venue and hotel.

The city centre is approx. 30 minutes walk from one side to the other and all of our city centre hotels, convention centre and main attractions and public transport hubs are all within this space. Not only is it easy to walk, it is beautiful!

You and your delegates can take in the stunning waterfront and heritage of Liverpool and take some amazing photographs of our beautiful buildings and waterfront. As well as saving you money on transfers and reducing your carbon emissions, it is good for the overall wellbeing of delegates to take a walk before or after the conference and de-stress. For places when it is too far to walk like arrivals into Liverpool John Lennon Airport – there is an express bus which is a much better option than jumping in a taxi. It’s quick, easy and comfortable and much better for the planet.

Choose plant based

Offering a plant-based menu is one of the best ways to reduce your event’s carbon footprint. Liverpool has a wide range of caterers who source their produce locally and can create amazing vegan or vegetarian meals that all your delegates will enjoy.

Ask our team for connections to local caterers. Don’t forget to tell your delegates to bring reusable water bottles so they can be refilled instead of using single use plastic bottles!

Go digital

Print less and take advantage of the technology in our venues to reduce paper waste. Digital screens for programmes, event apps and even sustainable badges are now an option and the convention bureau team can advise you on the best way to approach this.
