Wellness is at the forefront of many people’s minds as we enter the new year, but for Spaces at The Spine, it isn’t a resolution that fades by spring. Wellbeing underpins everything they do as a venue, from catering and AV to everyday logistics and, crucially, the physical spaces in which its events take place.

As one of Liverpool’s leading destinations for conferences, exhibitions and meetings of all sizes, the venue welcomes guests from across the North West and beyond into its dynamic, ergonomic event spaces. Alongside state-of-the-art technology and highly skilled in-house teams who work seamlessly to deliver exceptional events for their clients, one of its biggest priorities is the environment that surrounds every event.

At Spaces at The Spine, they believe wellness-centred architecture matters more than ever. Attending an event shouldn't’ only be about a smooth, glitch-free experience; it should be one that actively supports physical and mental wellbeing too.

A healthier building for a healthier experience

When Spaces at The Spine opened in 2021 in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter, the wellbeing of its occupiers was fundamental to its design. The venue was developed in line with the ethos and principles of the WELL Building Standard, incorporating ten core concepts: Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind and Community.

These principles are not only embedded in the venue’s architecture but continue to shape its day-to-day operations. As a result, Spaces at The Spine is WELL Certified at the Platinum level, becoming the only venue in the city to hold the prestigious title, while also being housed in one of the healthiest buildings in the UK, The Spine.

As the hospitality industry increasingly recognises the role played by wellbeing in events and life alike, being able to provide spaces that actively promote health is something clients consistently recognise and value.

Light, air and space: Supporting mental wellbeing

Both the exterior and interior design embrace nature and natural materials where possible, beginning with an abundance of natural light throughout the building. Light-filled environments are proven to help lift mood and reduce stress while improving productivity and focus, all of which are vital elements when hosting or attending events.

High-quality ventilation and air filtration systems further enhance comfort, ensuring spaces feel fresh, breathable and energising throughout the day. Combined with open, spacious layouts, this creates an environment that naturally supports mental wellbeing while encouraging people to move and engage more freely.

Biophilic design: Bringing nature indoors

Biophilic design plays a central role at Spaces at The Spine, with natural materials, textures and greenery woven throughout the building. These elements don’t just look impressive, they help promote calmness, creativity and overall wellbeing, making them a subtle yet powerful feature of the event experience.

Take, for example, The Atrium, located on the venue’s twelfth floor, this space includes an indoor vertical village with a carefully-selected range of plants that act as a double health booster. They improve air quality by producing oxygen while creating a restorative, uplifting environment for delegates, guests and teams alike.

A building designed to encourage movement

True to its name, Spaces at The Spine was thoughtfully designed with movement in mind. Open layouts reduce stress and encourage people to move naturally throughout the building, rather than remain sedentary for long periods.

Accessible staircases, varied spaces and flexible layouts allow our venue to adapt to different event formats, while making it easy for guests to navigate and explore. It’s all part of creating a healthier, more engaging experience for everyone who visits.
